Origin: The Virginia Highlander originated in Virginia, U.S., when breeder William Pugh aimed to develop a small riding horse suitable for beginners. Pogo, a foundation stud, was a cross between Arabian, Tennessee Walking Horse, and Welsh Pony. The breed was developed with Morgans, Tennessee Walkers, Arabians, American Saddlebreds, Hackney, and Welsh ponies. Height: 13- 14 hh (132-142cm) Colors: Typically black, gray, chestnut, and roan. Bay and white have also been observed. Characteristics: Fine head, large eyes set far apart, short back, sturdy hoofs, small stature though well-proportioned, prominent gaskins, natural single-footed and four-beat gait Use: Used as a general-purpose riding horse.
